Dorm showers

I know there are a lot of threads about showers but bear with me. This question is mostly for college guys who live in the dorms at school. At my dorm there are stall showers so that no one sees each other naked unless you are standing outside your curtain naked. I walk to the shower in just a towel and then throw it over the bar and then get in the shower. I don't care if someone sees my dick, i dry off outside the curtain in plain view for anyone. But so many guys walk to the showers completely clothed and then undressed behind the curtain so noone will see them and then they redress before leaving. WTF is up with these guys? do any of you do this or see people doing this?

My dorms have the same kind of set up for our showers and I have the same thoughts as you. It always confuses me when guys do that. We all have the same parts, what is there to be bashful about? Who cares if your big or small, cut or uncut, curved or straight, it's still just a penis.

Well I care. I dont know if this makes me a bad person, but I've glanced over, copped a stare at some really hot guys.

At my college, the freshman dorms are all communal showers. No dividers, no curtains. Nothing but sweaty freshman.

What school is this? I would have thought that most dorms would have switched to partitions of some type by now, I mean there were communal showers at the gym and pool when I was in school, 02-07, but the dorms were always private to some degree.

I just know that to me shower stalls are cramped enough the way it is, i much prefer an open shower room, and I can't imagine taking my clothes in there since I don't want to get my clothes all wet, and I'm already concerned enough with trying to not touch the walls of the shower stall.

I don't care what other guys have, though it is interesting to see the differences but looking at the differences can be accomplished without staring, When I went to my first nudist event that was the most comfortable I have ever been with my size, etc since I was able to see that soft there are guys of all shapes and sizes, some cut, uncut, etc. etc.

My university may have been unusual... all the dorms were set up in way that showering was pretty private... in the dorms with hall bathrooms, there were no open showers, it's all stalls. No one has to see you nude ever, if you don't want. And in the newer dorms, with suites, it's one shower per bathroom serving from 1 to 4 rooms. Still private.

In grad school, the dorm I lived in was a very old building with nice common areas. In keeping with the communal atmosphere, the showers at the time I lived there were also communal. They were off to one side of the bathroom, with a large area with bench and towel hooks for leaving your stuff and drying off, and adjacent to that a large room with 5 shower heads -- two on the side you enter, and 3 directly across.

As this dorm was designed for students of all countries (though most of us were from the States), it seemed to make sense that it had this open format. You quickly learned that people from Afghanistan and Peru and Denmark didn't look that different when naked, though we all might have certain different customs about what we wore to the showers and what we carried with us.

Because of the setup, you pretty much had to strip naked in the ante room, hang up your towel and robe/shorts and walk naked into the shower room. There was a curtain closing off the ante room from the sink area of the bathroom, but most of us left it open -- it seemed a little paranoid to keep opening and closing it. So, if you happened to be shaving you may catch a glimpse of naked guys going to and from their shower, but it really was no big deal.

The year after I left, the dorm embarked on a weird modification of the shower areas. Apparently in response to numerous requests from Islamic students, who felt that social nudity was personally offensive, the dorm adminstration put up a bizarre system of connecting curtain rods and curtains inside the big shower rooms on each floor. It was awkward, because to get to the back 2 or 3 shower heads, you essentially had to tear open the curtain of where someone else was showering and stroll through (can you picture it?) In some ways, it actually was more private when it was one open room! You could just shower with your back to the others and be done with it, though few were that modest. I've stayed in the dorm again as an alum -- a great lodging deal in Chicago -- and found the setup ridiculous. And now a lot of the guys no longer hang up their robes and towels in the ante room, they walk completely dressed into the shower area and start hanging stuff from the curtain rods. Oy.

One thing I really miss about the big shower room without curtains was that on those occasions that you had the room to yourself, or with just one other person, it was a great feeling to be nude in that big open space. Now it feels really confined and uncomfortable and you keep bumping into curtains.

Back whan I was a student and today, no one to my recollection strolled down the hall naked to the bathroom; even though these were male floors, women could be visiting. Most of the US guys wore gym shorts and T-shirts, and most of the foreign guys wore either bathrobes or pajamas (dressing gowns or pyjamas, in that other English).

Personally, I think people who have hangups about just stripping off and walking into a shower have substantial hangups in other areas of their lives, too.

I agree with GymFresh's final comment. I think that the increasing dominance of the religious right in our society is creating a pattern of learned shame which is being reflected in life in many negative ways. In Psych grad school I did a study of what I called "Birthday Suit Therapy". Part of the conclusion is reflected in the comments of some above who have experienced nudists events. Stripping away the outer shell reveals the authentic self, reveals the disguises and pain of hiding. When we accept ourselves and others, our lives are more peaceful, loving, happy and real. The "Harrad Experiment" of the '70s explored this topic.
On the shower issue - Freshman year college dorm had gang showers. I never noticed my dorm mates having an issue about undressing in front of other guys but I was the guy who walked naked down the hall to the showers with my towel over a shoulder and secure. I wasn't the only one who did this regularly. There was just a safe openness between us like brothers all going through this same time of life together. There was no disrespect meant and never knew any to be taken. With my Psych background I am acutely aware of human behavior and casually notice at the various gyms where I workout and in my travels that when there are curtained shower stalls, there is little conversation in the locker rooms versus clubs with gang showers and much more relaxed, interactive, open atmosphere and resulting behavior. I feel sorry and sad when there are tourist who use my club in this resort town here who change in the mens locker room under a towel, wear trunks in the steam room and hot tub not daring to be seen. Who is teaching and exampling this shame, lack of self acceptance that I believe breeds fear and lack of trust between men? I understand in this age of pedophilia and sexual abuse the need to teach caution and safety to our children but not to this extreme. At the public pool recently a group of maybe seven-year-old boys came into the gang shower where I was showering with their jaws agape staring at my naked body as if they'd never seen a naked man before. Maybe not. What's up with this dads? Comments?

Curtains?! What the fuck are you talking about... I mean it's been a while since I was in college, but are you saying that everyone has their own little stall with a curtain? that's the saddest thing I've ever heard of. My college showers were just like a locker room with one big room and shower heads on the walls. This shyness about being naked thing is getting really fucking out of hand! for christ sake, America is not going to be happy until every man has his entire penis cut off at birth and everyone's turned into a Ken doll. I'm gay and this shower curtain thing is the GAYEST thing I've ever heard of... what is happening to you young guys out there today..? you sound like a bunch of 11 year old girls... sorry to be so mean... i hope I didn't make anyone cry.

I never did live in a dorm but did share a bathroom with 3 roomies who were strangers at the time. It was a 4 bedroom house with 1 huge bathroom that had 3 sinks and one big shower that could easily fit 2-3 people but we never shared, it had a large glass door so there was really no way to hide anything other than wearing something while showering. I'll admit was really nervous the first couple of weeks and tried to shower early or while tthey were out. People say we are guys and we all have cocks but they come in all sizes and I was not blessed in that department. Eventually I got over it and noticed we were all about the same size except for one guy and eventually became no big deal to be naked around them however, I am not so comfy when showering at the gym, some guys walk around slapping their knees. I guess I would too if I could.

Not a college dorm, but I remember the first time I backpacked around Europe being a little intimidated by the fact that European guys thought nothing of wandering around the shower-room naked. I figured 'when in Rome' and guess what? Nobody gawked or stared or tried to make a wild pass at me. Straight guys just aren't that interested in other guy's junk. It still makes me laugh to see American men behaving like nervous school-girls in a locker room/public shower situation.

Can somebody a little older tell me if this is a new prudishness? I can't imagine a generation of guys conscripted to fight in WW2 or Vietnam being so scared of male nudity.

Whew ! I guess I will date myself by explaining that we boys were expected to change for phys-ed (strip to underwear or less, if a supporter (jockstrap) was needed) and get completely naked and shower together before being allowed to go to our next class, starting in Grade Seven (Canada). It was utterly non-sexual, more hygiene-oriented than anything, and after initial awkwardness, everyone decided "what the hell ... " and got naked, as required.

The change room and shower and a bathroom were all one big room, subdivided. The changeroom had no lockers, the shower room had about about fifteen showerheads on the three walls, with two or three showerheads on tall stainless steel columns in the middle of the room. About twenty guys could be showering at the same time. Regardless of where you were, you were visible to everyone, and everyone was visible to you.

The benefit ? Well, first of all, you quickly learned that guys come in a spectrum of characteristics, but when all is said and done, we are more alike than we are different. Secondly, the differences between us (remember, this is Prime Puberty time) height, weight, musculature, hairiness, width, body type (endomorph, ectomorph or mesomorph) skin colour, hair colour, size of arms, legs, hands, feet, presence/absence of pubic or underarm hair/treasure trail/hairy ass/arms/lets/feet/toes/fingers, size of genitals, length/thickness/proportioning of penis shaft to head, cut/uncut/somewhere in between, appearance/absence of facial hair, I could go on ad nausem ... eventually everyone ended up at pretty much the same endpoint. In other words, you, and all of your classmates came to realize they and everyone else was NORMAL.

My recollection was that yes, (suffering form monumental hormone overload, which occurs naturally to every male during puberty) meant that hardons happened frequently. One guy started the trend by slapping his, and shouting out so everyone could hear "down you bastard, you're embarrassing me in front of my buddies". This was followed by much snickering, but each guy knowing that 'the damn thing sometimes has a a mind of its own". Which usually produced a room full of hardons.and a fair bit of giggling. By the second month or Grade Seven, no one made a big deal about it happening to themselves or anyone else. I do recall this continuing through to the end of grade eight, and becoming increasingly rare in the subsequent grades.

Were there gay guys among us ? Of course there were, absolutely, but the lockerroom/shower/bathroom was neither the time, nor the place for that kind of activity. Or, at least to me, that was understood by everyone.

So ! We have a generation of males who are terrified of showering after phys-ed using the facilities at their school, taking off their shirts in hot weather, wearing any type of bathing suit or underwear that isn't at least the size of a sack of potatoes, yet thinks nothing of going home after school, and jacking off in front of the webcam, broadcasting to gazillions of people on the internet.

I don't understand, but maybe I am a cretin, I don't know. What really scares me is that in about twenty or thirty years, there is going to be a whole population of grandmas and grandpas, with severely obese bodies, unavoidably flashing tattoos, and listening to Rap and Hip Hop and calling them the Golden Oldies. Now, THAT is scary ...

Okay this might be me just being...well...me but I am an openly gay and live in the dorm currently. (I am at home now-well you get the picture!) Most guys at my school are not gay (surprise surprise lol) and at first used to be kinda awkward around me. I think this kind of awkwardness tends to make some guys afraid to expose themselves in the dorm's communal bathroom. I personally am not an exhibitionist or shy person. I just go about my business. Like fool, you ain't got that much to show, and quite frankly, i ain't showering to look at you. I am there to make sure I am clean and my hair is deep conditioned for superb moisture. That's about it. But meh, my response I guess is to agree that some guys are just shy and also some guys like are afraid to be judged/stared at i guess. IDK. That is just my musing.

When I was living in the dorm we had large undivided communal showers. Off of the showers was the sinks and toilets and bunch of hooks to hang your towel. No changing rooms or anything like that. There was a lounge with a TV adjacent to the main bathroom.

My dorm was co-ed by floor, men on the odd numbered floors, women on the even. The floors were restricted between 11 pm and 8 am, which meant during those hours you could not be on the floor of the opposite sex. In reality it worked out that guys stayed off the girl floors during that time, and girls needed to understand that the guys assumed that they were not going to be there during that time.

Everyone on my floor just walked to the shower with their towel and shower kit. Some guys wrapped the towel around them, but most of us just walked from our rooms to the showers naked with our towels around our necks. Nobody thought much about nudity. After showering many guys would hang in the lounge naked or toweled to watch the Big Valley on TV. By 8am everyone was dressed as the floor was open after that. Not that we didn't have girls on the floor before that.

A couple of years ago my son and I went back their for a college visit trip, as he was trying to decide where to go to school. We ended up staying in my old dormitory. I thought that they may had renovated the place and replaced the showers with facilities for the overly modest. To my surprise the building was beautiful everything was new, including the shower rooms, but they retained the communal showers. The floor was about 3/4 occupied with men going to summer school, conference attendees, and visitors like my son and I. What really surprised me was that guys were still walking to the showers nude.

I later had a conversation with the head of housing and complemented him on the care and upkeep of my old dorm. I told him I was surprised to see the communal showers were retained. He said that from a renovation and daily maintenance aspect the communal showers are much more cost effective. He then went on to say that it is expected that the residents have matured beyond the overly modest junior high attitudes that they may have had previously; ouch.

When I was in the dorms, my dorms were much more modern, not the huge locker room showers. Dorms only had a 2 / 1, one bathroom shared with 4 guys, while 2 guys shared a room. But you could lock both the doors, and the bathroom was located directly between both of the rooms. At UCF btw

My dad went to OSU, and he said it was like gym showers though, with little to no privacy

The communal showers at the Baptist college I went to 35 years ago still bring up vivid images of nude, male beauty. It saddens me that those experiences are denied most new college students.

In the dorm I lived in this past school year, there were 4 separate stalls with curtains. Most guys would come in in just shorts or shorts and a tshirt, get behind the curtain and undress. Then they'd dry off behind the curtain, get their underwear on and finish getting dressed outside the curtain. That's what I did too.

I've seen that too! I go into the dorm showers with just a towel or my boxers with my towel over my shoulder. I turn the water on and I get undress or put my towel on the rack and get in and out. Ha!

I've seen guys go in with their whole attire and get naked put their clothes on the rack and then turn the water on. I feel that is a waste of time and energy, but its what some people are comfortable with doing.

at my college ... dorms had 4 bedrooms in a suite. total of 8 guys in the suite. each suite has two small bathrooms. each bathroom has a small stall shower, toilet and sink. no chance whatsoever to see another guy naked unless he leaves the door open or something.

the main athletic facility on campus had gang showers however.

with too many boys being brought up my mothers only and with little contact with the male world it is bound to happen. They grow up to be not very good fathers. Also the political correctness and the homophobia promoted by the media contribute to it.

When I lived in the dorms, the guy across the hall (who lived by himself, even though we had double rooms in the building) constantly listened to gospel music and you always saw him carrying around his bible. He was the guy who would get undressed inside the stall, behind the curtain, and I think the few of us who were in the bathroom at the same time every morning did the same out of respect. I don't care one way or the other, but I think we simply did the same as him because he was a very nice guy and we didn't want to make him uncomfortable.

Last time I saw him out, he introduced me to his wife. Was kinda shocking that it was the same cheerleader I'd jerk off to in the shower stall beside him. Ayoh!

the only time i spent in dorms was when i was in canada... the dorm floor was co ed with co ed bath room... that was an interesting experience!!! well each shower had its own lockable door and it was a condition that we had to be covered ... towel/dressing gown was fine. but the architechs thought it would be great to but WHITE tiles on the ceilings... COMPLETELY reflective... got a good show a few times and im sure other got one of me :p

The dorm I was in had a co-ed floor, but men's and women's separate bathrooms.
Most women would go in or out wearing only a towel, most dudes would go in and completely undress once in an individual shower. I chose the towel method myself, and was lucky enough to get my fuck on in both showers (I either had a gf, or a good lady friend at any time).
I guess some people are hung up on their image and how other's view them. Maybe a small dick will hurt their future reputation? Maybe they are homophobic? Who knows?
