Final Fantasy

lol, u lot are cool.

I luv the Turks too. and Don Corneo - when i first played it (me and my bro used to play it late at night - long b4 we let our sisters loose on it lol) Don Corneo reminded us of one of our mates, who's a bit comic-pervy like austin powers haha. made the game even funnier.

Only recently found out that 'Turks' is a term for yuppy-ish young professionals who are unscrupulous lol. Kind've apt.

Story of 7 was amazing - was really gutted when Aeris died - and it was also really moving when that top plate thing fell onto the slums. My little sis luvs it that much she did a story based on it for uni lol.

BTW - what other game franchises r ppl into? Bit of a Gran Turismo and Tomb Raider freak, meself...

I loved FF games while in college. I started with Final Fantasy IV and played every one through FF XI (except X). I tend to love the earlier games. Now that they are re-making some of them on the DS, hopefully some of you younger players can revisit them. Here is how they rank for me:

1) FF VI -- the best story, best characters. It is the ultimate FF game as they were originally conceived. PLEASE make a nintendo DS version!

2) FF IV -- the game that stated it all in terms of style. Classic storyline, classic characters. DS version is awesome.

3) FF VII -- Amazing, reinvented the RPG. Great storyline and graphics (for its time.) But still with that classic FF feeling.

4) FF XII -- This one for me brought it all back. The story was actually understandable (for once in a long while.) Loved the battle system. The characters were good (but why does the hero always look like Meg Ryan now?!?!?!)

5) FF IX -- Now we get into ones i dont really care for as much. I liked that this title returned the game more to a traditional style of characters and storytelling. And a few of the characters were really good (Vivi). But a lot of them (the mouse woman, the red headed guy, and OH MY GOD -- the Jar Jar Binks that is that cook character) were either featurless or lame. Story really fell apart at the end too.

6) FF V -- I didn't play this game until much later. I'll bet if I had been able to play it in sequence, i would have liked it a lot better. The job system was really cool. I kinda feel like me playing this game is how most of you younger player feel trying to play FF4 or FF6. (Which is a real shame.)

7) FF X -- the first truely 3-D FF game has its high moments (mostly graphically). And the upgrade system was very nice. But, OMG, what is up with the story. I'm just a dream????? It started out good, and i like the way they were willing to off main characters at the end. But, wow, I have NO clue what that was about!

And finally, my least favorite of all time!!!!!

8) FF VIII -- Coming right off of FF7, this game had a very hard act to follow. And man, did it fall short. From the boring hero (......), to the sappy love story (90210 anyone?), to the constant summoning of espers, to the incredably lame "We dont remember, but we all new each other as kids" storyline, which basically robbed the characters of any individuality in their origins. It's cool if others like it... but for me, it is definately the worst.

Well, that's an old school gamer's take.

NOTE: edited to typos in roman numerals.

This one would be FFIX :biggrin1:

Still a favorite of mine, and Quina (Jar Jar, in your words...) is one of my top four for my battle line-ups

I wrote a story based on FF VII too! lol it was for science. The task was to write a story about the search for new sources of energy.

Well in my story Barret, Professor Gast and Cid went into a spaceship and landed on a planet with a giant crater in the middle. Then out of the crater came Jenova! I forget the rest.

My science teacher was very impressed and said she thought someone much older had written it. All my friends knew it was based on FF7. I got a chocolate bar for my effort (I was about 13 at the time).

lmao - did your physics teacher go on a quest to discover mako energy after reading it? heheh

(also - anyone seen the daihatsu materia?!!! cool name haha)

lol I looked that up! I thought it sounded like a car

Alexander was a good materia. I didn't find it til about my third or fourth playthrough though.

I also got 100/100 on all the snowboarding games at the Gold Saucer. There is no prize for it :( lol

It looks like somethin' Shinra would come up with an' all haha.
Hmm dont think i was all that good at the games in the Gold Saucer - plus the music there did my head in a bit haha. The chocobo racing was ok tho - and the snowboarding run when you get to that village later on...

[anyone got a ps3 btw? got one a month back and wonderin what games to get. Got Motorstorm, LB Planet and Mirror's Edge (cool) so far... ]

In regards to FFVII, this person has a number of youtube videos where they edited bits and pieces of the game's files to come up with some pretty entertaining scenes. The Gold Saucer date scene with various pairings, including Cid/Shera, Tifa/Aeris, Hojo/Lucrecia, etc, as well as various other amusing little scenes.

If you have a PS3 you have to get Metal Gear Solid 4

That's another great series! Excellent story, especially MGS1. Gray Fox, Revolver Ocelot.

Plus the main character's name is homoerotic lol. Solid Snake.

Lol, didn't notice he had a dodgy name! d'oh

I remember playing a demo of the first MGS for PS1 - think it was one of the first games to use the dual shock controller. Cool game tho - thanks for the suggestion! :D

O man i totally forgot about tactics, that was such a good one with all the job classes and the special characters! Such a cool battle system too.

Did anyone see the movies? Spirits Within or Advent Children, what did you guys think?

I remember liking Spirits Within, but it's been so long that I can't remember too many details, only the basic storyline. I also remember being horrified that the peoples' souls were actually being taken. I always figure that no matter what kind of horrible monster/creature/thing/whatever kills you and maims you and mutilates you, at least your eternal, immortal soul will be fine and it'll move on. But no, this actually took that too. Horrifying.

I liked Advent Children. I wish there had been more Aeris though, but oh well. On that note, I think my favorite little detail was how they were all wearing the pink ribbons. Every single person. Including the big, macho, badass, overly masculine characters. Seeing a tiny bit of the water burial in full, amazing, modern 3D glory was fantastic. I just wish it had been the whole thing, and much closer up.

It's funny how many limit breaks were actually shown in the movie. The first time through, I really only caught one of them, haha. I think it was either Climhazard or Blade Beam. I watched a video later on that showed all the limit breaks in the movie and was floored at how many were actually shown, and that I merely didn't notice.

Another of my favorite parts was the one guy's cell phone ringtone - the first few notes of the victory tune. I actually laughed out loud on that one. When I get a phone that'll support it, I'm totally fucking getting that ring tone. I wouldn't mind the battle theme as a ring tone either. Although come to think of it, Cid's theme would make a pretty good ring tone too.

That was the best bit of the whole film :biggrin1:.

Yeah - the flowers bloomin' in the Church music was cool (incidentally, it's here that the bloke's ring tone goes off in the Advent Children film) - think it's the same music that's on when she dies and her materia drops on the floor, isn't it?...

Btw - did anyone call Aeris 'the slum drunk' in that church??? :p (i didnt, i have to say...)

geez, come on, guys! FFX was beautiful. The story was intriguing, cool characters, and i loved the whole world of Spira and the whole religion of the Fayth and Yevon. Plus, the ending left me devastated which i never expected from a video game. (This happened to me once again right after i reached the ending of Metal Gear Solid 3)

I did love the music too. Like the instrumental version of "Isn't It Wonderful", the Ending theme and "A Fleeting Dream" (also known as "Someday the Dream Will End") I haven't finished FFXII yet, but i'm getting there.

I love Final Fantasy :) I'm studying Japanese in university and Final Fantasy is huuuuge in Japan so I know about it that way and my best friend is a really big FF fan. He basically forced me to play Final Fantasy XII which I ended up falling totally in love with! I started on FFX a while ago but got too busy and never got very far in it but this thread is making me want to get my friend's PlayStation and play FFX again! The main character (Tildus?) was so cute, too! Basch was hot, too! :p
