You know, for the most part, I agree with you, at least as far as the premise that it’s Rob’s business and he is absolutely free to select the moderator or operating parameters as he chooses with no input from the users. But the concept of moderator elections isn’t as absurd a request as you make it out to be.madame_zora said:... he OWNS the site and doesn't owe it to anyone to do things any way other than how he chooses. As members, we can choose to stay and participate, or leave- but it is absurd to suggest that ANYONE should hold elections for moderators for a site he owns!
Many boards have elected moderators or advisor boards, and I think they’re there for a reason. Remember that, unlike traditional brick and mortar businesses, an internet board has value because of its members. Collectively we give away content to the board and then purchase it back, either through subscriptions or ad views. Without member interaction, postings and the galleries, there would be little value here.
I can’t think of a parallel brick and mortar business, where the business owner supplies only the venue and the customers supply the product. I imagine if there were one, the recognition of the importance of customer satisfaction would pale in comparison to, say, the perceptions at your typical five and dime store.
