Shaving naked in front of others

Seriously, think about how silly this is.

Sure, if someone is noticeably dirty, covered in mud, dust, grease, whatever, then he should clean up before getting into a pool.

But, normal perspiration? The normal bugs that reside amongst the genitalia? What's the point?

A guy farts in the pool and he probably does far more harm than the guy who didn't shower.
So what happens is that it's the proteins on your body that are harmful because the amino acids are used by bacteria to grow. The chlorine in the water breaks down the proteins and bonds onto them, resulting in chloramines. Those are rather bothersome to skin. It also uses up chlorine. So the place has to use more chlorine. A quick shower removes a lot of the proteins. Farts probably don't do anything since they're gaseous.

Yep - I've noticed pools in the UK where people don't shower before entering the pool tend to have much more chlorine. It's much harder on the eyes!

I like German pools : everybody thoroughly showers (naked) before entering the pool and they're much cleaner.
The worst is during summer : all sorts of people just jump into the water without showering and the chlorine becomes unsufferable.

Conclusion : everobody should shower naked, it's much healthier.

Okay, just for what it is worth -

Showering or not showering does not have any effect whatsoever on chlorine levels in a pool. The person responsible for maintaining a pool is supposed to check chlorine levels and then add chlorine as necessary to hold it at the desired level.

Some pool owners choose to set that level higher than others and, occasionally, someone adds more chlorine than is called for. When that happens, you either wait it out while the chlorine depletes naturally or there are other chemicals that can be added to lower chlorine levels quickly.

Of course, I have no idea what any of this has to do with shaving naked in front of others.

There are no ways to lower free chlorine quickly. It just has to evaporate. High levels are dangerous as well.

The chlorine doesn't disappear, it becomes chloramine. Chloramine stays in the water forever unless it is removed chemically or via certain special filters. Did you know when you smell what you think is chlorine in a pool, it's actually chloramines?

Anyhow, I shave naked in front of others. I've even seen guys shave their pubes in the locker/shower area, which I have always wondered if that is crossing the line.

IMHO shaving anything other than your face, which requires a mirror, should be done in the shower. Nobody wants to walk in another guy's clippings and skin. At least give it a fighting chance of being washed down the drain.

Obviously, you have never owned a pool before

Either sodium thiosulfate or hydrogen peroxide can be used to safely lower chlorine levels.

Also, chlorine does not evaporate; it is essentially destroyed by sunlight however.

Chlorine does evaporate. It's a volatile solute in water, and out-gases over time, as at typical air temperatures it is a gas.

Additionally, chlorine can be filtered via adsorption, using activated charcoal granules, which will bond to chlorine ions.

Back to the topic. I saw a man shaving (his face) while naked at the gym on Wednesday.
My gym has two rows of sinks.
One visable from most of the locker room and one in an alcove with the urinals and toilets.
He was at one of the open sinks.
Not at all a common sight.
Few men shave at all at my gym, and most of the ones who do are either wearing underwear or have a towel around their waist.

He is comfortable in his nakedness. Those of us who have served in our Military don't cringe or feel uncomfortable around naked men.

A large portion of us, at least. lol.

@Triasco: Army? I take it you agree with my statement? When I was a gym member years ago, I would start early before work. Shave, shit and shower, the three "S's" of Military. When I shaved, I kept a towel wrapped around me out of courtesy to others and to show some sense of dignity. But, when one spends four or more years in the Military as an enlisted member, we did not have the personal privacy the commissioned officers enjoyed.

I've seem a few men at my gym shaving naked some not. Doesn't bother me. We're men, and most men shave after a shower while their beard ia soft. I shave naked myself, but I shave while I'm still in the shower.

To me it's perfectly normal for a man to shave naked. It's a mens locker room. If you're offended by the site of a naked man maybe you shouldn't be in the locker room. If more men were comfortable in their own skin, and with their own sexuality, nudity in the mens locker room wouldn't be so shocking for some.

Personally i couldn't care less whether some man shaves naked in the locker room. As long as he cleans up after himself.

As an enlisted soldier making the transition to officer, I have yet to see much of that privacy. lol. Indeed, I do agree. My attitudes toward nudity have shifted dramatically toward indifference since I joined.

I was in USAF Intel years ago. I recall the commissioned officers having a bit more privacy. I was an NCO. Should have stayed in to pursue the OCS route they had laid out for me.

You have alluded to something I have wondered about for some time: Is it what I call "the fear of queer"? Some time back I learned from a coworker who is much younger than I am that school athletes did not shower after practice or a game. They went home and showered there. One guy actually remarked how he would not dare be around other naked men. I responded that he was lucky not to have joined the Military!

The reality is, the majority of gay men would never: 1) Be out to their team unless that team was fully understanding. 2) Shower with teammates unless still in the closet because of the anxieties that might produce.

I have always shaved right after showering in the mornings. In college in the early eighties I think all of the guys on my floor shaved just as soon as they showered (well those weren't trying to grow a mustache or beard). Only a few of them I recall wrapped a towel, the majority of us just shaved like the above image. If I'm playing golf, which is usually every Saturday morning, I don't shower or shave before leaving the house. I will shower and shave in the locker room at the country club afterwards. Most if not all of the older guys (myself included) all stand naked at the sink just after they dry off and shave. Most put the towel on the floor in front of them to stand on. The younger guys will however wrap a towel if they are going to shave or when walking back to their lockers. There is a father and son at the club who always golf together and its funny to watch them. The dad, who is in his sixties will walk naked through the locker room to the showers and then stand at the sink naked while shaving. His son, who I would guess is mid to late thirties will wrap a terry shower wrap around him and then walk to the showers, As soon as he dries off he wraps up and walks back to the lockers to dress. He remains covered while he puts his underwear on. I have never understood that but yet see it often in younger men. If my father were still alive and saw something like that, I can only imagine the words that would be coming from his mouth.
